All of the returning cast keeps their respective VAs and they are written more or less in character. Also, in the post game they remove the lock on Ludger so you don't have to keep him in the party anymore. It does bring back the cast of X1 as fully playable party members though, that you can use/control freely outside if main chapters. That said it's still really awkward that he doesn't talk. The thing people misunderstand or don't like about ludger is that its delievered not through how ludger feels about the events but how all those around him react to Ludger. The story wasnt too terrible and still garnered an emotional response from me. The debt system that locks story chapter behind paywalls is really annoying as well. Useful skill are now either way to expensive to use or nerfed so they aren't nearly as good as they were in X1. They kicked the level cap back up to 200 and revamped the skill system so now it sucks. X2 was alright as far as Tales sequels go (was definitely a better sequel then Symhonia 2 was). The endgame dungeon is a frustrating grindfest. The returning characters from Xillia 1 are somehow irrelevant in their own universe now because everything's about Ludger and they're basically just there to fill up party slots. The game constantly chooses your party lineup for you, meaning you can either play Ludger or switch characters every 10 minutes. It also ruins a lot of the decent lore and atmosphere aspects the first game had. It tries so hard to be dark and edgy but it's too hilariously incompetent to actually pull it off. The story is on par with a bad fanfic, even ignoring Ludgers mary sue tendencies. And even if you can somehow tolerate this it's still incredibly awkward to have the main focus of the game be a guy who only responds in grunts and screams. He is better than everyone at everything, everyone instantly loves him and they permanently force him into your party.

The decision to have a silent protagonist backfired big time because Ludger is a horrible mary sue and an insult to character writing. The gameplay loop is now a horrible nightmare that kills any pacing because someone thought it'd be a great idea to give the player a mountain of debt that you have to work off through hours of monotonous mmo-style sidequests or else they won't let you continue the story. The maps, which were "somewhat dull" in Xillia 1, are now "incredibly boring" because most of the game, most of the items, most of the characters and even most of the bosses are directly copied over. I replayed the game like 2-3 times just to play around with it.īut everything else about the game is wrong. The "ToX2 is better" reaction largely comes from people viewing Xillia 2 as a combat system that just happens to have a game attached.ĭon't get me wrong, I LOVE the combat in Xillia 2.
